Legendary Guitarist ULI JON ROTH Says He Enjoyed His Time With The SCORPIONS
April 23, 2004Legendary guitarist Uli Jon Roth recently spoke to Metal-Realm.com about his time with the SCORPIONS and his work as a solo artist. Asked what he thinks about his musical past, Roth said, "It's a journey. When I was with the SCORPIONS I enjoyed it very much, I learned a lot at that time. To me it was like an apprenticeship in the music business. I certainly enjoyed the first four years, I didn't enjoy the last year because my mind was already in ELECTRIC SUN, but I couldn't play that with the SCORPIONS. It just didn't fit, so I wanted to leave. ELECTRIC SUN, I also have very good memories from, again it was another step from the journey. I mean, I enjoyed my entire journey, some things I enjoyed more than others, but I have a lot of good memories, so I have no problem with my past, you know. But I do prefer to play, perform new music. But sometimes I feel like playing something old, and particularly if I know the fans want to hear it, I'll play it, you know..."
With regards to the possibility of a reunion with the SCORPIONS, Uli said, "Well, it's been on the table many times, but it never happens for some strange reason! Some times Rudolph [Schenker] and I talk and Rudolph says, 'Let's do a reunion,' and I say, 'Great let's do it,' but it never happens. Sometime when we're maybe 90 we'll do it, but so far it never happened. And I've played with Klaus Meine one time for Jose Carreras gala."
Asked how he likes the SCORPIONS as they are now, Roth said, "I don't actually know a lot... I don't listen to rock music, really, I don't listen to music!! I don't have time, I have music inside of myself so... I don't know what's going on! Sometimes I hear something on the radio and sometimes like it, very often I don't. Most music that we hear seems to me that it lacks inspiration and lacks the... element of the new. Even old music when you hear it for some reason it's always alive, but that's not true of all music. A very few pieces can actually last for a few hundred years..."
